‘Traces of Thought 08’ explores the fragile boundary between landscape and abstraction. I was interested in how little is needed for a landscape to remain recognisable, and how colour, light and fragments of form can gradually shift an image away from representation.
The painting is built through multiple layers of paint and silkscreen, allowing elements to appear, disappear and overlap. Rather than depicting a particular place, I wanted to evoke the experience of looking at a landscape and the thoughts and impressions that arise from it.
The work is also influenced by the Dutch landscape and by the idea that a place can exist as much in memory and imagination as it does in reality.
